The Lord Bless you and keep you
the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you
the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace (Num 6:24-25)
Over three thousand years ago, this simple yet beautiful prayer was given to the prophet Moses.
God informed him that the High Priest (Aaron) and his sons (those of priestly linage) would utilise this benediction to bless the people of Israel. Three times the Lord’s name is uttered. Scholars have thus alluded to the Trinitarian significance of this prayer. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The complete being of God blessing His chosen people. The Priests alone would be the mediators of this Holy prayer.
Now, another mediator, a far superior one, lives to intercede for us (Heb 7:25). The blessing of protection, grace and peace given through the sacrifice of His very life. He now sits at the right hand of the throne of Majesty in heaven (Heb 8:1).
At Christmas time millions of people celebrate the birth of this High Priest. The largest religion on earth including Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant all turn and in unison declare:
“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace”
